What is a Doula?

A doula is a “trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth” (dona.org).

What are some benefits of having a doula?

Women who give birth with the support of a doula are:
    • less likely to have a cesarean section (c-section)

    • less likely to use medications to speed up labor

    • less likely to use pain medication

    • less likely to rate their childbirth experience as negative

    • more likely to have shorter labors with fewer complications

What are the limits of a doula's care?

A doula does not perform any clinical tasks (such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, etc.), make decisions for you, or speak to hospital/birth center staff on your behalf.

Where can I find out more about doulas?

If you're interested in more information about doulas, I recommend www.dona.org as a great resource.

What can you expect from me as a doula?

I am DONA International trained (previously but not currently certified) and will draw on my professional training, knowledge, and experience to provide you with emotional support, physical comfort, and advocacy to help promote a safe and satisfying birth experience. I will provide: reassurance and perspective to you and your partner; assist with relaxation, massage, positioning, and other techniques to enhance your comfort; discuss any concerns with you and suggest options for labor progress; and facilitate you receiving timely information necessary for you to make informed decisions. I am working for you (not the doctor/midwife or hospital/birthcenter) before, during, and after labor.

"Kriss was our "village wise woman" through the birth of our first child! My husband, Thad, was able to be a better coach with her help. Kriss also supported and encouraged us through the ups and downs of waiting to go into birth naturally (almost 2 weeks after our baby's due date!). When Levi finally arrived, we were able to greet him heartily after giving birth with no additional interventions. Kriss provided us with all the guidance and care we needed in this pivotal time!"
